August Breidenstein was born on April 19th 1926 in Towson Maryland. August grew up on the Breidenstein family farm near Loch Raven. August wanted to serve his country so he convinced his mother to sign his enlistment papers at the age of seventeen. August would leave high school before his junior year and join the US Navy on October 25th 1943. Basic Training was at Bainbridge Naval Training center, August scored high on his testing and began Quartermaster school taking 16 weeks to complete. After completing Quartermaster school August volunteered to serve aboard a PT boat, on May 31st 1944 he arrived at the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center Melville RI. August would spend the next three months training and learning every duty aboard a PT boat. August was assigned to PT boat Squadron 28, PT 380 in November 1944. August would serve as Quartermaster and back up gunner aboard PT 380 throughout northern Philippines taking part in The Invasion of Lingayen Gulf, 6–9 January 1945 and The Battle of Luzon Jan 9, 1945 – Aug 15, 1945. Late in the war Squadron 28 was assigned to PT base 17 Bobon point, Samar, PI. August would stay with his Squadron until it was disbanded in October 1945. A short time later August would be assigned to the USS Mink, an Armadillo-class tanker that would stay in the Pacific until the ship was recalled home. The trip took a month and arrived in Newport News, Virginia on May 16th 1946. August would then be assigned to the USS Pawcatuck AO-106 in reserve until March 1947. August worked as a paid Firemen with the Baltimore County fire department after the war. In the early 1980’s August and his wife moved to Worcester County, Berlin, Maryland. August would enjoy his retirement hunting, fishing, eating good seafood and spending time with his family, until his passing on December 18th 2006 age 80.
